Meter Boxes
You may have noticed that outside your home, you should have a gas meter box, an electric meter box and a water meter box. These boxes are what the utility companies read every month to see how much gas, electricity and water you are using in your home or business. If you have a multi occupant building and the utilities are separate, you will have meter boxes for every occupant in the building. It is always wise to look at these boxes from time to time to see if they are working and to see if the meter is moving rapidly.
If you see a rapid moving electric meter, you may have a faulty meter, but chances are something in your home is drawing a huge amount of electricity. This is a cause for concern and you need to find the problem immediately or you could end up with a rather enormous utility bill. If you find a rapidly moving meter, call an experienced electrician who can troubleshoot appliances in your home as well as check wiring to see if anything is drawing the power. You could possibly do this yourself, but an electrician knows what to look for as far as the amount of electricity that is being drawn.
You should always keep a record of your meter reading. This is not only to see if you are using a huge amount of electricity, but also, so you can see if the meter is reading correctly. If the meter is faulty, the utility company will prorate your bill according to pass usage. If you think you are using to much power, call an electric contractor to take a look around your home or building. If the electrician finds a problem with the meter instead of in your home, they can contact the utility company with their findings.
